From gasoline prices to careers in geology, speakers will tackle a number of issues during Earth Science Week, October 13-17. The lecture series, sponsored by the Department of Geology, is being held on the Allendale Campus. The list of speakers is as follows:
Monday, Oct. 13
1-1:50 p.m. in 107 Manitou
Steve Forman from the Department of Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago will speak about “Landscape response to megadroughts in the western U.S. in the past 2000 years: Potential land-atmosphere-ocean connections.”
4-4:50 p.m. in 101 Loutit
Steve Mattox, a professor in Grand Valley’s Department of Geology, will talk about “Twenty years, four continents, and twelve jobs: Insights into finding a career in geology.”
Tuesday, Oct. 14
1-1:50 p.m. in 103 Loutit
Judy Visscher and Dan Nally from the Holland Board of Public Works will talk about “Underground Sequestration of Coal-fired Power Plant Carbon Dioxide Emissions.”
Wednesday, Oct. 15

Larry McKay, in Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of Tennessee, is a 2008 Birdsall-Dreiss GSA Distinguished Lecturer. He will speak about “Germs and Geology: Emerging Issues in Waterborne Pathogen Research.”
5:30-6:30 p.m. in 122 Manitou
Larry McKay will talk about “Chattanooga Creek: How 30,000 tons of coal tar brought together scientists, social workers and a community.”
Thursday, Oct. 16

Jim O’Connor from Van Manen Petroleum group in Grand Rapids is giving a speech called, “What’s Up With Gasoline?”
