Three faculty members will lead students and other participants through
a day when they live on just pennies to learn about innovative sustainability.
“World Day,” planned for Saturday, September 22, will teach participants
how to live on a $1 day, similar to people in the poorest regions of
North and South America. The event runs from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Kamp
Kiwannis, 385 North Lakeshore Drive in Holland.
“It’s more than just play acting,” said Paul Lane, professor of
marketing. “We want students to think about how to develop products and
services that would be sustainable and accessible for all economic classes.”
Lane organized the event with John Farris, associate professor of
engineering, and Jodee Hunt, associate professor of biology. World Day
originated from their study abroad trips to Nicaragua. Participants at
the event will organize into teams and begin to gather resources to cook meals.
Participants who plan to attend are asked to bring a sealed bottle of
vitamins, which will be given to Nicaraguans. Those interested in
attending should RSVP by sending Lane an e-mail at [email protected].
World Day is sponsored by many departments, including Collegiate
Entrepreneurs Organization, an interdisciplinary student group.
