Planned giving director retires
In less than 10 years as Grand Valley’s first director of planned giving for University Development, John Heerspink has shephered 101 new endowed and annual scholarships and secured $14.6 million of planned gifts.
Heerspink retired March 30 from that position. Maribeth Wardrop, vice president for Development, said Heerspink helped create a modern development office.
“John came with the right expertise at the right time,” she said. “He’s done an incredible job with donors and building the program.”
Heerspink had worked at Calvin and Kalamazoo colleges prior to joining Grand Valley in 2000.
“I’ve been grateful for this opportunity,” said Heerspink. “It’s been very satisfying to see so many faculty, staff, alumni and community donors embrace Grand Valley through their estate planning. I’ve enjoyed working with so many folks at the university.”
He plans to play the violin more, travel, volunteer and spend time with family.
Diane Purgiel, who had been director of corporations and foundations, was named director of gift planning.
