Period instruments featured at 'Mostly Bach' concert

The Grand Valley State University Early Music Ensemble will present a "Mostly Bach" concert featuring soloists performing on period instruments.

The performance is scheduled for Sunday, March 25th, at 8pm in the Sherman Van Solkema Recital Hall, Performing Arts Center, Allendale Campus. The concert is free and open to the public.

A truly all-star cast of specialists on historically informed practice include the Chicago-based recorder virtuoso Patrick O'Malley, former GRSO member baroque violist Nancy Yagiela and violinists Patricia Ahern and Christopher Verrette, both members of the renowned, Toronto-based, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra.

In addition, the concert will include solo and chamber works by Telemann, Corellli and Torelli. Opening and ending the program will be Bach's Brandenburg Concerti Nos. 6 and 4, respectively. With their exotic instrumentation, extreme technical demands and intimate one-on-a-part texture, Bach's epoch-making Brandenburg Concerti are widely acknowledged as one of the cornerstones of the repertoire.

The GVSU Early Music Ensemble began its activities in fall of 2003 under the direction of Pablo Mahave-Veglia, associate professor of music. The group is dedicated to the performance of pre-classical repertoire utilizing period instruments, or faithful modern replicas, as well as historically informed performance practice.
