Set in Afghanistan, "The Kite Runner" tells the heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father's servant. It examines the devastating history of Afghanistan over the last 30 years. It is Hosseini's debut novel. He was born in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1965. In 1980, his family was granted political asylum in the U.S. He moved to San Jose, CA, with his family in 1980. He attended Santa Clara University and graduated from UC San Diego School of Medicine. He has been in practice as an internist since 1996.
A presentation called "Borrowed Robes: International Childhoods in Afghanistan" will look at what it was like growing up in Afghanistan during the "golden years" described in The Kite Runner .The presenters will be Doriana Bertoni Gould, Lakshmi Nagarajan and Mary Meadows Pyburn.The event is Thursday, February 22 from 7-9 p.m. in 103 LTT.
