GVSU faculty showcase sabbaticals

Grand Valley State University professors will showcase sabbatical projects from ancient Greek poetry and cancer research, to international business communications and professional development opportunities for elementary teachers of mathematics.

Faculty from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will hold a Sabbatical Showcase on Tuesday, April 17. The event, which is geared to faculty by faculty, is also open to the public from 1:30-4 p.m. in the Grand River Room, Kirkhof Center, Allendale Campus. Media are invited to attend.

For the 2006-2007 academic year, CLAS had 88 faculty eligible and 36 faculty that actually took a sabbatical.

“We are very excited about this annual event, which began last year,” said Associate Dean Jann Joseph. “It provides an opportunity for CLAS faculty to share their sabbatical experience with their peers on campus.”

A sampling of sabbatical work on display:
  • Diane Rayor, chair of the Classics Department, translated two Greek poems by seventh century BCE poets Archilochus and Sappho that were recently discovered through multispectral imaging of papyri.
  • Mark Schaub, associate professor of writing, studied business communication practice in Central Europe while teaching for a semester at Poland’s Kraków University of Economics with a Fulbright Lecturing Grant.
  • Laurie Witucki, associate professor of chemistry, undertook two cancer research projects at the Van Andel Research Institute, focusing on melanoma and prostrate tumorigenesis and metatasis.
  • Ester Billings, associate professor of mathematics, spent her time expanding professional development opportunities for elementary teachers of mathematics through a grant from the Michigan Department of Education, awarded to Grand Valley’s Regional Math and Science Center.
