Grand Valley's Menon elected to international post

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Shaily Menon, chair of the Department of Biology at Grand Valley State University, has been elected to a seven-year term to the International Union of Biological Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences.

The IUBS is an international non-governmental organization founded in 1919 to promote and facilitate research in the biological sciences. The U.S. National Academy of Sciences is the official adhering body to the IUBS on behalf of the United States.

The committee meets May 9-12 in Washington, D.C. for a symposium focusing on cutting-edge biological research addressing critical needs for sustainability in advancing population health, developing sustainable energy solutions, promoting food security and conserving ecosystem services. As part of the international activities, the USNC/IUBS is encouraged to look also at issues across several disciplines, for example, fostering opportunities for younger scientists to become engaged in collaborative research, promoting the responsible conduct of science, or examining advances in cross-cutting fields such as metagenomics.
