Shaily Menon, chair of the Department of Biology at Grand Valley State
University, has been elected to a seven-year term to the International
Union of Biological Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences.
The IUBS is an international non-governmental organization founded in
1919 to promote and facilitate research in the biological sciences. The
U.S. National Academy of Sciences is the official adhering body to the
IUBS on behalf of the United States.
The committee meets May 9-12 in Washington, D.C. for a symposium
focusing on cutting-edge biological research addressing critical needs
for sustainability in advancing population health, developing
sustainable energy solutions, promoting food security and conserving
ecosystem services. Visit www.iubs.org.
As part of the international activities, the USNC/IUBS is encouraged to
look also at issues across several disciplines, for example, fostering
opportunities for younger scientists to become engaged in collaborative
research, promoting the responsible conduct of science, or examining
advances in cross-cutting fields such as metagenomics.
