GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — It may take more energy than most for Brian
Ciluffo to walk the stage at Grand Valley State University's
Commencement Saturday, but he is determined to celebrate with this
family and friends.
Ciluffo was diagnosed in October with anaplastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare
form of lymphoma. The 23-year-old Grandville native started chemotherapy
right away and had to do his course work from home. “Support from my
family, girlfriend, fraternity and adviser at Grand Valley got me
through,” said Ciluffo. “They pushed me and told me I could make it.”
Ciluffo’s doctor has allowed him to postpone his next treatment until
after Saturday so he can enjoy the day with his family, friends,
supporters and his entire fraternity. Ciluffo, a Hospitality and Tourism
Management major, is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and the Hospitality
and Tourism Management Club. His academic adviser is Chris Longstreet.
GVSU Commencement will take place Saturday, December 8, at 10 a.m. at
Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids. About 950 students are expected.
