Body image expert to speak at GVSU

To recognize National Eating Disorders Week, several Grand Valley State University departments have joined together to sponsor a week of events.

Author and motivational speaker Robyn McGee kicks off the week on Monday, February 26, with a presentation on body image and how eating disorders are becoming more prevalent among women of color.

McGee is the director of Women's Resources at California State University-Dominguez Hills and the author of "Hungry for More," a book that offers a holistic approach to weight and health concerns. McGee wrote the book and started speaking around the country after her sister died following gastric bypass surgery.

During her presentation, McGee will address how anorexia, bulimia and compulsive overeating were once thought as only affecting white and middle-class women, but are now on the rise among women of color. Her multi-media presentation will begin at 7 p.m. in the Cook-DeWitt Center, Allendale Campus. It is free and open to the public.

Other events during the week include the following:

  • Jean Swap, February 27, Women's Center, 161 Kirkhof Center. Bring an old pair of jeans and swap them for a new pair.
  • My HAIRitage, February 28, 2 p.m. Women's Center lobby. Learn more about African American hair styles and cultural significance.
  • Eating disorder screenings, February 27-March 1. Counseling Center staff members will be at various locations, check online at www.gvsu.edu/counsel for details.
The week's programs are sponsored by the Women's Center, Work Life Connections, Women and Gender Studies, Counseling and Career Services, and several student organizations.
