Award-winning filmmaker Sarah Price visits GVSU

Independent filmmaker Sarah Price will be in Grand Rapids to screen her new film and meet with students at Grand Valley State University.

Screenings of her new film, Summer Camp!, will be held at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts at 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 26 and Thursday, September 27. Tickets are $2 for students and UICA members and $5 for the general public. A Q&A session with Price will be held after the Thursday screening.

Allendale Campus events on Thursday include a presentation by Price from 2-4 p.m. in room 94, Kirkhof Center and an opportunity to meet with Price from 4-5 p.m. in the Women's Center, also in Kirkhof Center.

Summer Camp!, the humorous and moving new documentary from filmmakers Bradley Beesley (Fearless Freaks: The Flaming Lips; Oakie Noodling) and Sarah Price (The Yes Men; American Movie), follows the day-to-day drama of 90 kids let loose in the woods at Swift Nature Camp in northern Wisconsin. The filmmakers submerge themselves into the curious summer camp subculture, a place where kids can be kids, where their home and school lives momentarily fade into the background as they go through the highs and lows of adolescent rituals: sing-alongs, talent shows, hazing rituals, homesickness, counselor mutiny... and first love. Music is performed by The Flaming Lips and Noisola.

Price’s other films include the feature documentaries The Yes Men (UA/MGM 2004), Caesar’s Park (Sundance Channel 2003), and American Movie (Sony Pictures Classics 1999—Grand Jury Prize winner for Best Documentary- Sundance Film Festival 1999). Additional work includes a music video for Warner Bros. artist Har Mar Superstar, and artist David Robbins’ TV variety show, The Ice Cream Social (the MOMA-Paris 2004). Other notable credits include co-editor of Chris Smith's American Job (Sundance Film Festival 1996) and sound on Michael Moore's The Big One (Miramax 1997).

Her visit, co-sponsored by the GVSU School of Communications, GVSU Women's Center, and UICA, showcases a successful independent filmmaker established in the Midwest (Milwaukee) and emphasizes the growing documentary production activities at Grand Valley.
