'Arctic Journey' informs and entertains

Dance professionals from Grand Valley State University will share their love of the Canadian Arctic while celebrating Western Michigan's kick-off to International Polar Year.

"Arctic Journey" relates an Inuit story about a walrus hunting tragedy and includes Inuit Drum Dancing, Inuit Throat Singing and performances by dancers from the Grand Rapids area. The program on Friday and Saturday, February 9-10, at 7:30 p.m., is at the Spectrum Theater, 160 Fountain N.E. Tickets, available January 29, are $5 for seniors, students; $10 adults. The program was created and choreographed by the husband and wife team of Elizabeth and John Kilbourne, who teach in the Movement Science Department at Grand Valley. It is based on their life and research in the Canadian Arctic and includes a curriculum mode for sixth-grade students.

"We are working with 60 teachers and 1,500 students from Grand Rapids Public Schools," said John Kilbourne. "They will see special performances on February 7 and 8."

"Arctic Journey" is made possible through the support of Grand Valley State University, Grand Rapids Public Schools, Grand Rapids Community College, The Dyer-Ives Foundation and the Canadian Consulate-Detroit.
