Grand Valley State University President Thomas J. Haas
addressed the state budget in an e-mail to faculty and staff on Sept.
26. The text of that e-mail is below.
Dear Colleague:
As of today, the state budget for the fiscal year starting October 1 is
not finished, and news reports about government closure abound.
Questions have been raised about how a state government shutdown might
affect Grand Valley State University.
We hope that a state government closure does not occur. In the event it
does, the university will remain open and conduct business as usual.
While state agencies cannot operate without budget authority, public
universities, with their separate funding sources, may do so.
Please reassure your students that with or without a new state budget,
Grand Valley will continue to serve them as usual.
Should a state government closure occur, we can all hope that it will be
of short duration. We will monitor the situation daily and advise you
accordingly should circumstances change.
Thomas J. Haas
President
