"Indulge in a Cause" will run from 5-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 2, in the exhibition hall of the DeVos Center, 401 W. Fulton St. in Grand Rapids. Tickets are $30 ($5 for GVSU students) and available by calling the Women's Center at (616) 331-2748 or sending an e-mail to [email protected].
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Women's Center scholarship endowment and Women's Center programming. Scholarships are offered annually to nontraditional female students who may not otherwise qualify for financial aid. "Indulge" is the center's key annual fundraiser.
"The Women's Center uniquely serves as a place of intersection for various organizations, departments and individuals to come together on areas of mutual interest for women," said Marlene Kowalski-Braun, director of the Women's Center. "Collaboration is the cornerstone of our current and future success and we appreciate the support we get from the campus and community to continue our work."
Ashley Nickels, a Grand Valley graduate student, has been involved in Women's Center programs for several years. She is the Women's Issues Volunteer Corps coordinator and, this year, she serves as adviser to the student-run production of Eve Ensler's "Vagina Monologues," which is scheduled for February 10, 11 and 14. The WIVC pairs students with volunteer and service-learning opportunities at area non-profit agencies that work with women and girls.
"I've gained leadership skills through my work at the Women's Center, which helps me in my classes and will definitely help in the future," she said. Nickels will graduate with a master's degree in public administration in April.
