Vanden Wyngaard returns to teach and perform

Grand Valley State University Carillonneur Julianne Vanden Wyngaard spent the winter months traveling and performing around the country, but now she's back.

Vanden Wyngaard will spend the summer teaching and will perform June 25, during the Cook Carillon Concert Series, and July 12, during the Beckering Family Carillon Concert Series. See www.gvsu.edu/music for a complete schedule. Prospective students may contact Vanden Wyngaard at (616) 331-2112.

Another special performance is planned for July 4, in conjunction with a nationwide simultaneous bell-ringing ceremony. "Let Freedom Ring" will be initiated at the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, with 13 tolls rung at 2 p.m. to commemorate the original 13 colonies. At that moment, carillons, church bells, city halls, courthouses, national monuments and ships at sea will join in the celebration. Vanden Wyngaard will follow the bell tolls with a Cook Carillon concert of patriotic selections.

A member of Grand Valley's music faculty since 1965, she served as chair of the Music Department from 1984-1996. When the university built the Cook Carillon in 1994, Vanden Wyngaard was selected to learn to play the instrument.

Named university carillonneur in 1997, she achieved carillonneur status in the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America in 1999 and in June 2000, completed the rigorous diploma requirements at the Netherlands Carillon School, in Amersfoort, Holland.
