Van Cliburn Gold Medalist to perform at Grand Valley

Alexander Kobrin, the Gold Medalist winner at the Twelfth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will perform at Grand Valley State University on Monday, October 16.

The Van Cliburn Medalist Concert Series is a part of Grand Valley's Fall Arts Celebration, sponsored by Macatawa Bank. This concert is sponsored by a gift from Robert and Judith Hooker.

There will be a Carillon Prelude Concert from 7:30-7:50 p.m. Kobrin's performance will begin at 8 p.m. in the Louis Armstrong Theatre, in the Performing Arts Center on the Allendale Campus. His program will include works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann. A reception will follow the concert.

Born in Moscow in 1980, Kobrin completed his studies at the Gnessin Academy of Music under Tatiana Zelikman and at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory under Lev Naumov, where he received his master's degree.

As a result of his triumph at the 2005 Van Cliburn Competition, Kobrin made his Kennedy Center recital debut. He launched his 2006-2007 season with his New York Philharmonic debut at Lincoln Center in July. He has also performed this summer at the La Rouque d'Antheron International Piano Festival in France and the Tuscan Sun Festival in Italy. When not performing, Kobrin teaches at the Moscow State Gnessin Academy of Music.

Available for purchase during intermission and following the concert will be Kobrin's CD for $20 or DVD for $30. The Cliburn Competition CD includes Kobrin's performance of works by Brahms and Rachmaninoff. He is also prominently featured in the DVD, "In the Heart of Music," the film documentary about the Twelfth Cliburn Competition, which premiered on PBS stations across the U.S. in fall of 2005.
