Joyce Marcum, executive director of Safe Haven Ministries of Grand Rapids, spoke during the unveiling ceremony at noon Monday in the Cook-DeWitt Center. The figures will be reshrouded at 10 a.m. Friday, October 27, in the Women's Center, 161 Kirkhof Center.
The founder of a national men's organization will speak on campus about how men can help prevent violence against women.
Tony Porter, co-founder of A Call to Men, makes a return appearance at Grand Valley; his presentation is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 24, in Loosemore Auditorium of the DeVos Center. Porter's speech coincides with the Silent Witness Project, which runs through the week. His speech is sponsored by the Women's Center, Kent County Domestic Violence Coordinated Response Team and Center for Women in Transition in Holland. The event is free and open to the public.
Porter and other Call to Men staff members travel around the country giving presentations and building coalitions against domestic violence. He wrote a book, Well Meaning Men& Breaking Out of the Man Box, scheduled to be out in December.
