Science Olympiad tournament returns to Grand Valley

For the 22nd year, Grand Valley State University will be the site of balloon races, rocket launches and bridge building. It's just part of the excitement during the upcoming Michigan Science Olympiad Regional Tournament on Saturday, March 25.

More than 80 teams from schools in Kent and Ottawa counties will spend the day competing in more than 50 events that stretch students' scientific and technological knowledge while challenging their processing and application skills. They are divided into two groups. Division B includes students in grades 6-9, while division C is for grades 9-12.

The public is welcome to attend and watch many of the problem-solving events. A complete schedule and list of participating schools and events can be found online at www.gvsu.edu/mso-r12. Registration and welcome begin in the Fieldhouse Arena at 8:30 a.m. A full day of events branch out to nearby buildings, including Padnos, Henry, Loutit and more.

When teams finish their own competitive event, they can watch other teams, or relax and watch March of the Penguins in the Big Screen Theatre, 107 Manitou Hall, from 1-3:15 p.m. Afterwards, its back to the fieldhouse for the Coaches Turn and Robot Demo, followed by the awards ceremony.
