Rushkoff to speak at Grand Valley

An internationally respected media theorist will present a local lecture that explores how communications affect our values and our lives.

Douglas Rushkoff, an author, filmmaker and NYU professor of communications, will present "The Persuaders: Marketing & the Creation of the Citizen-Consumer," at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 12, at the Louis Armstrong Theatre, in the Performing Arts Center on Grand Valley State University's Allendale Campus.

His presentation will explore ways to raise children in our media-driven culture and how we find and make meaning through art, business, education, politics, and religion.

Rushkoff received critical acclaim for his 1999 PBS Frontline documentary, "The Merchants of Cool," which examined corporate America's massive, sometimes subversive, efforts to capture the elusive teen market. His 2004 Frontline follow-up, "The Persuaders," explored how advertising, marketing and political campaigning are impacting American society. Rushkoff has written 10 best-selling books on new media and popular culture.

The event, sponsored by Grand Valley's Art and Design Department, in partnership with the College of Interdisciplinary Studies, the School of Communications and the Grand Rapids Institute for Information Democracy, is free and open to the public.
