RMSC director earns AP award

Mary Ann Sheline, director of the Regional Math and Science Center, received the AP Achievement Award -- the highest honor for administrative/professionals -- during the annual luncheon on April 25. The award recognizes the outstanding contributions by a staff member to the university, professional field and surrounding community.

Sheline has worked at Grand Valley for 22 years. She started as a part-time employee and helped conduct the Regional Science Olympiad. As director of the RMSC, Sheline has been instrumental in developing programs like MS3, a support group in which upperclassman help freshmen succeed in science and math; and STEPS, a week-long camp for 6th grade girls to explore science and engineering.

She has overseen dozens of initiatives with regional schools and teachers. Sheline also serves on numerous area boards and committees.

Michelle Burke, associate director of Student Life and chair of the AP Committee, said 85 people submitted 100 nominations and letters of support for recipients in six categories. The following people also received awards:

  • Commitment to Diversity: Marlene Kowalski-Braun, director of the Women's Center; and Susan Mendoza-Jones, director of Integrative Learning.
  • Committment to Students: Dan Gerbens, pre-professional adviser for the SMART Center; and Karl Rishe, living center director.
  • Innovation Award: Terry Pahl, facilities engineer; and Chris Scott, associate director of Financial Aid.
  • Service to Community: Eric Klingensmith, Career and Counseling Center counselor; and Marty Litherland, director of the Northern Michigan Continuing Education Program.
  • Outstanding Team Project Award: World Year of Physics.
