New GVSU president, football team, others will help freshmen move to campus

Grand Valley's new president, board members and even the Laker football team will lend "Helping Hands" as freshmen and other students move into living centers this week.

It's a Grand Valley tradition that many faculty and staff members help carry suitcases and other belongings, and greet students during "Helping Hands," a campus community event organized by the Office of Housing and Residence Life.

Move-in week begins Tuesday and continues through Thursday in the living centers at the north end of campus (parking available in Lot D). The schedule of special volunteers is as follows:

  • President Thomas J. Haas will volunteer on Wednesday, August 23, from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
  • The Laker football team and coaching staff will volunteer throughout the day on Thursday, August 24.
  • Board members will be on hand Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Call News and Information Services for specific times.

Most volunteers will check in at Kleiner Commons to receive assignments. Media members can ask Housing staff (who will be designated by nametags) where volunteers have been sent.

-- Convocation Friday
Haas will then formally usher in the new academic year when he speaks at convocation ceremonies on Friday, August 25. He will be joined on stage by President Emeritus Arend D. Lubbers, Provost Gayle R. Davis and University Academic Senate Chair Rob Franciosi.

Convocation will begin at 11 a.m. in the Fieldhouse at the Allendale Campus.
