New education courses meet criteria of new state law

The State of Michigan added a new reading requirement for beginning teachers who have yet to earn their Professional Certification. Grand Valley's Reading/Language Arts Program has created two new courses for teachers that will satisfy the requirements of the new law that was passed last spring.

"There is a lot of confusion about this new requirement," said Patterson. "Teachers are just now being notified through their school districts that they may need to take a course."

The two new Grand Valley courses, one for elementary teachers, the other for secondary teachers, will be taught on weekends and will meet the criteria established by the state.

"The new law requires that all teachers who will not have their Professional Certification by July 2007 will need to take a reading assessment course appropriate for their certification," said Nancy Patterson, chair of the Reading/Language Arts Program at Grand Valley.
