Sponsored by the Community Service Learning Center, the event begins at 9:30 a.m. in the courtyard of the Pew Grand Rapids Campus.
Before volunteers go to their service projects, Stacy Stout, director of Honoring Our Youth, will give a kick-off speech. Participants will then be bused to various sites throughout the grater Grand Rapids area to work on different community service projects until 2 p.m. After the community service is completed, contributors will regroup downtown. Participants will use this time to reflect on their experiences from the day.
Last year, more than 500 Grand Valley volunteers served 20 area agencies for the day. Volunteers will have the opportunity to work with one of many different causes, ranging from animal care, mentoring youth, working with senior citizens and the homeless and women's issues. One group of students will work on cleaning up Grand Valley's ravines as part of Sustainability Week.
The national day of volunteering, promoted by USA Today, is entering its 16th year. Participants are given the opportunity to give back to the community on the nation's largest single day of volunteering. Questions can be directed to the Student Life Office at (616) 331-2345.
