Part historical retrospective and part discourse on the value of a liberal education, this collection of Lubbers' speeches covers the 32 years of his presidency, from academic years 1969-2001. It is the same period that brought us the Vietnam War, Cold War, counterculture, energy crisis, financial crisis, Reaganism, Generation X, and technological revolution.
Lubbers was president of an unusual and rapidly developing state university during a very significant period of American and global history. One significant element of his highly successful leadership style is that on a regular basis he articulated the goal of providing liberal education in a public context in relation to the currents of contemporary culture.
