Grand Valley State University's Latin American Studies Program presents the ninth annual Conference on the Americas. This year's theme is "Prospects and Awakenings Across the Americas."
The conference runs October 13-14. Friday night's events are at the Wealthy Theatre from 5-9:30 p.m. The conference kicks off with a community reception, keynote address by Greg Grandin of New York University, and a performance by a group of musicians from Trinidad and Tobago called Jewels of Nature.
On Saturday the confernce moves to the Eberhard Center from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The all-day conference includes keynote lectures, breakout sessions, workshops, panels, exhibits, and a film festival. Featured guests include:
- Ramiro Crawford (San José, Costa Rica), an expert on the Afro-Latin American Movement
- David William Foster (Arizona State University), who will speak on dance and politics
- Joy Olson (Washington Office on Latin America), involved in human rights and social justice.
