Texas State Rep. Joaquin Castro and his twin brother Julian Castro, San Antonio councilman, will speak during a C¿sar Chavez reception on Thursday, March 30, from noon-2 p.m. at GVSU's Alumni House on the Allendale Campus.
The Castros were born in San Antonio 31 years ago. They both attended Stanford University and Harvard Law School. Their interest in public service developed from watching their parents serve on many political and civic campaigns.
Joaquin Castro is one the youngest members elected to the Texas Legislature. He serves on the Border and International Affairs, Juvenile Justice and Family Issues committees. Julian Castro was the youngest person elected to the San Antonio Council at 26. Last year, he was an unsuccessful candidate for mayor.
Other events for C¿sar Chavez Week include:
- PBS documentary "The Fight on the Fields" will be shown March 27, 6-8 p.m. in the Cook-DeWitt Center.
- Panel discussion on immigration issues, led by Latin American Studies Coordinator Russell Rhoads, will be held March 28, 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Cook-DeWitt Center.
- Candle vigil and ofrenda is scheduled for March 29, 5:30-7 p.m. in the Cook-DeWitt Center.
- March in honor of C¿sar Chavez will be held March 31, 11:45 a.m., beginning at Zumberge Library and ending at the Kirkhof Center.
Chavez would have turned 79 on March 31. The civil rights activist died in 1993. He founded the first successful farm workers' union and later served as president of the United Farm Workers of America AFL-CIO.
