GVSU team to focus on scholarly communications

A team from Grand Valley State University has been selected to attend the inaugural Scholarly Communications Institute at UCLA, sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries and the Association of College and Research Libraries. Selection was competitive with about 200 applicants. One hundred were accepted into the program, including Grand Valley, University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Indiana University Libraries and University of Notre Dame.

The immersive learning experience will prepare participants as local experts within their libraries and equip them with tools for developing campus outreach strategies. By becoming fluent with scholarly communication issues and trends, they will be positioned to educate others.

A team of three Grand Valley faculty members will attend the institute this July: Millie Jackson and Nan Schichtel from the library and Mark Luttenton from biology. In addition, Lee Van Orsdel, Grand Valley's dean of libraries, is one of only four primary faculty for the institute. She will be facilitating the Faculty Activism section of the program.
