GVSU hosts robotics competition

Teams of high school students will design and building robots to compete against each other during an event at Grand Valley State University.

Grand Valley hosts the West Michigan FIRST Robotics Regional competition beginning Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1. Competing will be 48 teams from Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana.

FIRST stands For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. The students work alongside mentors to make their ideas a reality. The mentors are engineers and technicians who volunteer their time to inspire students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math  areas critical to the U.S.'s performance in the global economy.

The event is free and open to the public. Competition starts Friday, March 31, with opening ceremonies at 9 a.m. in the Grand Valley State University Fieldhouse in Allendale. The event runs 9 a.m-5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.
