Grand Valley Board establishes search committee for new president

At a special meeting held this morning, the Board of Trustees at Grand Valley State University decided how the search for a new president will move forward.

Following current president Mark A. Murray's announcement this week that he will leave after the academic year to head Meijer Inc., the Grand Valley board selected Donna Brooks to chair the Presidential Search Committee (PSC), which is made up of the other board members. Brooks was authorized to chair and select members of the Presidential Search Advisory Committee (PSAC). Following her selection as chair, Brooks told the board she will hold open forums to gather community input. The times and locations of the forums are:

  • January 17
11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.: Kirkhof Center (Grand River Room)
3:30-5 p.m.: Kirkhof Center (Grand River Room)
  • January 18
    11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.: DeVos Center (Loosemore Auditorium)
3:30-5 p.m.: DeVos Center (Loosemore Auditorium)
  • February 20
5-6:30 p.m.: DeVos Center (Loosemore Auditorium)
  • February 22
5-6:30 p.m.: Kirkhof Center (Pere Marquette Room)

In addition, the board voted to have Patricia Oldt, vice president for Planning and Equity at the university, serve as staff to the Presidential Search Committee and to give it authority to retain the services of an executive search firm or consultant to aid in the search for presidential candidates. Oldt also staffed the 2001 presidential search.

Brooks said she is optimistic about the caliber of candidates Grand Valley will be able to consider to fill the vacancy that will be left by Murray. "Mark has been extremely successful, but the Grand Valley community is successful," said Brooks. "We will find a new president to come into the Grand Valley culture of unity and purpose and this university will continue to flourish."

The board also authorized the membership of the Presidential Search Advisory Committee (PSAC). Four trustees will be members of the PSAC: Brooks, Jose A. Infante, Lucille S. Taylor and Kate Pew Wolters. The PSAC will also consist of six faculty members, two deans, three members of the university staff and a representative from the Student Senate, the Alumni Association and the general public.

The PSAC is charged with producing an unranked list of a suitable number of candidates to the Search Committee by June 30, 2006.
