Events tied to community reading

The second annual Community Reading Project will focus on Khaled Hosseini's novel "The Kite Runner." All members of the campus community are invited to participate in the project by taking part in discussions, programs and service activities relating to the book throughout the Winter 2007 semester.

Set in Afghanistan, "The Kite Runner" tells the heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father's servant. It examines the devastating history of Afghanistan over the last 30 years. It is Hosseini's debut novel. He was born in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1965. In 1980, his family was granted political asylum in the U.S. He moved to San Jose, CA, with his family in 1980. He attended Santa Clara University and graduated from UC San Diego School of Medicine. He has been in practice as an internist since 1996.

On December 8 from 3-4:30 p.m. in 167 Lake Ontario Hall, history professor Jim Goode will be doing a presentation on his experiences in Afghanistan. This event is open to all community members, but is focused for those who are using the book for Winter Semester. Snacks will be provided. Also, Wendy Hedrick has offered to coordinate a teaching circle for Winter semester through the Pew Faculty Teaching and Learning Center. To participate, e-mail her at [email protected].

Participants can sign up online or by calling 331-8655. The first 200 people to sign up will receive free copies of the book; other participants will receive a coupon for 20 percent off the price of the book when purchased at the University Bookstore. For more information, visit www.gvsu.edu/cois.
