There will be a community Kwanzaa celebration on Friday, December 8, 2006 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.in the Loosemoore Auditorium of the DeVos Center.
Kwanzaa is a non-religious holiday which was created to reaffirm and reinforce the bonds between people of the African Diaspora, starting with African Americans. This community celebration will help to educate those in attendance on the cultural and community significance of Kwanzaa and highlight the seven principles of Kwanzaa; unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.
The event is sponsored by the Grand Rapids alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Grand Valley's School of Social Work.
Community vendors will be on site to showcase their services and merchandise, and several noted Grand Rapids community pastors and elders from longstanding church congregations will be joining in as active participants and presenting portions of the celebration.
Attendees are asked to bring new or gently used winter wear to donate. For more information, contact event coordinator Valerie L. Holmes at (616) 813-0961.
