Affirmative action measure debated

Voters will decide in November whether to amend the Michigan Constitution to prohibit preferential treatment based on race, gender, color, ethnicity or national origin for public contracting, employment and education. Grand Valley State University is holding an informative panel discussion to hear both sides of the issue.

Panelists will include W.B. Allen, political science professor at Michigan State University and Lisa D. Cook, professor of economics at Michigan State University. The debate will be moderated by Matt McLogan, vice president for University Relations at Grand Valley, and the audience will have time to ask questions.

The debate will be Thursday, February 23 from 4-5:50 p.m. in the Loosemore Auditorium of the DeVos Center, 401 W. Fulton St. in downtown Grand Rapids. Parking is available in the Front Street lot (at the corner of Front and Watson streets). The event is open for media coverage and a mult box will be provided.

The panel is sponsored by the Seidman College of Business, the College Republicans, the College Democrats, the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies, and the Office for Multicultural Affairs.
