Arts at Noon in the Cook-DeWitt Center brings Neptune Quartet -- part string quartet, part jazz ensemble, part blues band, part orchestra, while at the same time retro and new world. Formed in 2001, the quartet plays its own original compositions as well as the music of Django, Frank Zappa, and Hank Williams. The group is a collaboration of cellist Crispin Campbell, mandolinist Don Julin, guitarist Angelo Meli, and bassist Glenn Wolff.
A new experimental concert series, Free Play, makes its debut Thursday evening. Groundbreaking artists are invited to Grand Valley to perform almost anything. The first concert in the series features percussionist David Cossin at 8 p.m. in Van Solkema Recital Hall.
Cossin is a specialist that stretches the boundaries of percussion performance by incorporating new media across a broad spectrum of musical and artistic forms. He has recorded and performed internationally with composers and ensembles including Bang on a Can All-Stars, Steve Reich and Musicians, Philip Glass, Yo-yo Ma, Bo Didley and others.
His numerous theatre projects include collaborations with Blue Man Group, Mabou Mines, and director Peter Sellers. Cossin was featured as the percussion soloist in Tan Dun's Grammy and Oscar winning score to Ang Lee's film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
