Students head back to school

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Some 22,500 students started classes this week at Grand Valley State University. This fall's freshmen class totals approximately 3,500 students. The following university experts are available to comment on topics related to fall and the back-to-school season.
  • Elizabeth Storey, 616-331-6494, assistant professor of education Storey can comment on the start of school for preschoolers, young children and college-age students.
  • Nancy Patterson, 616-331-6226, chair of the Reading/Language Arts program in the College of Education Patterson is an expert in reading improvement, writing and technology integration.
  • Sandy Miller, 616-331-3344, associate professor of education Miller can comment on special needs students and the educational system.
  • Ron Perkins, 616-331-3059, director of Labs in the Kirkhof College of Nursing Perkins can comment on various immunizations required for school admission.
  • Phyllis Gendler, 616-331-7185, dean of the Kirkhof College of Nursing Gendler can discuss health issues related to returning to school including tips on how to keep a student healthy, including avoiding the "Freshman 15."
