Grand Valley State University Artist-Faculty Series. Dale Schriemer, baritone, and Robert Byrens, piano. Schriemer, associate professor of voice at Grand Valley State University, performs Robert Schumann's song cycle Dichterliebe ("Poet's Love"), a memorable anthology of the endless pains and pleasures of love celebrated by the Romantics. She serves on the Artist-Faculty at Grand Valley and is a member of the Perugino String Quartet. September 7-10 Grand Valley State University presents the premier of "Unwavering Light: Einstein in 1905," a play in two acts by Richard Janaro, performed by a three-person ensemble from the Miami Theatre Company. September 30-Opening night of Grand Valley State University's Shakespeare Festival Main Stage Production: "Hamlet," which runs through October 9. Grand Valley State University Shakespeare Festival Guest Scholar. Gerald Freedman, an award winning director of numerous Shakespeare and other plays, was the leading director and artistic director of the New York Shakespeare Festival and the first American director invited to direct at the Globe Theatre in London, England. Currently the Dean of the School of Drama at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Public presentation 1-3 p.m. Reception follows. Loosemore Auditorium, DeVos Center, Pew Grand Rapids Campus.

Congressman Vernon Ehlers will be presented with a U.S. flag that was flown in his honor at the Geographic South Pole in Antarctica, to recognize his commitment to education, science, and the environment. Grand Valley State University Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies. War and Empire -- The Debate. In what promises to be a lively debate, Victor Davis Hanson and Arianna Huffington will square off on whether the United States is an empire. Hanson is a historian and author on Greek, agrarian, and military history, and contemporary culture. Arianna Huffington is a nationally syndicated columnist and author of books ranging from biographies and histories to social and cultural criticisms to political satires. 8 p.m. Gerald R.
