The Society for Student Philosophers (SSP) is an international student organization which promotes student participation in the field of philosophy. With over 300 student members, the SSP actively participates in the American Philosophical Association (APA) annual meetings by holding two student panels at both the APA Pacific division meetings and the APA Central division meetings. In addition, the SSP annually holds a two-day conference which is attended by students from across North America. In 2004, the SSP Annual Conference was hosted by Temple University in Philadelphia.

The Philosophy Department at Grand Valley serves a wide variety of students through its major and minor programs, as well as the many general education classes taught by Philosophy faculty. The philosophy program is built upon a solid foundation of study in intellectual history, on close reading of classic texts, and on engagement with contemporary developments in the field. The department's 22 full-time faculty offer expertise in virtually all areas of philosophy, with particular strengths in American Philosophy, Eastern Philosophy, Ethics, Philosophy of Religion, and Comparative Philosophical Studies.
