National experts gather for 'War and Empire'

Award-winning author and historian H.W. Brands will deliver the keynote address during the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies' conference exploring whether the United States is internationalist or imperial. The Iraq War has intensified the debate over whether the U.S. is an empire or a nation builder.

The two-day conference discussing "War and Empire" will take place on Grand Valley State University's Grand Rapids and Allendale campuses Oct. 6 and 7.

H.W. Brands is professor of history at the University of Texas, and an award-winning author or editor of 25 books. He will deliver the conferences keynote address just two days after the release of his latest book, "Andrew Jackson: His Life and Times." His other books include "The Age of Gold: The California Gold Rush" and the "New American Dream;" "The First American: The Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin;" and "TR: The Last Romantic."

He is a regular guest on national radio and television programs, and is frequently interviewed by the American and foreign press. His writings have been published in several countries and translated into German, French, Russian, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

"We are very fortunate to have Bill Brands speak in Grand Rapids," said Gleaves Whitney, director of Grand Valley's Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies. "He is very appealing because he combines his scholarship with an ability to make history compelling to a wide variety of audiences."

During the two days, 20 scholars will gather at Grand Valley State University to discuss American wars and empire. Has our behavior through the years been imperial or internationalist? If we are an empire, are we an empire of good intentions or of reckless might? Where do we go from here?
