Missouri congressman delivers on friendly wager

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sporting a Grand Valley State University hat and championship T-shirt, U.S. Rep. Sam Graves, R-Missouri, delivered on a friendly wager placed between him and U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland, over the outcome of the 2005 NCAA Division II national championship football game.

The GVSU Lakers prevailed over the Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats 21-17 in a nail-biting game that hung in balance right to the final second.

"I commend my good friend Sam Graves for his excellent display of sportsmanship in following through on our friendly wager," Hoekstra said. "The Lakers and Bearcats played an intense game on Saturday, but fortunately for me and my staff Grand Valley's talented scholar athletes again brought home the championship title."

Graves and his staff served Hoekstra and his staff a meal from Pagliai's Pizza, a popular local pizzeria located near the Northwest Missouri State University Campus.

"I want to congratulate the Lakers on their undefeated season and an impressive third National Championship," Graves said. "I was anxious to taste the asparagus guacamole, but it will have to wait for another day while we treat West Michigan's congressman and his staff to a Maryville tradition."
