GVSU faculty panel discussion planned for Constitution Day

Grand Valley State University's Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies will celebrate Constitution Day by showing a civil rights documentary that will be facilitated by a faculty panel discussion.

The event will be Monday, September 19, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in the Cook-DeWitt Center on the Allendale Campus. The PBS documentary "Mississippi: America," which focuses on the coalitions that worked to secure voting rights for African Americans in the 1960s, will air. Three faculty members -- Steven Robbins, liberal studies; Anthony Travis, history; and Jennifer Stewart, sociology -- will participate in a panel discussion.

Last year, President Bush signed a bill establishing Constitution Day and requesting educational programs in all federally funded institutions.

Gleaves Whitney, director of the Hauenstein Center, said the event is a good opportunity for the public and Grand Valley community to learn more about the country's freedom charter.

"The timing regarding the Voting Rights Act couldn't be better, since our nation just celebrated the 40th anniversary of the act, and it is up for reauthorization in 2007," he said.
