Grand Valley scholarship gains funds from DVD sales

Deanna Morse, Grand Valley State University professor of film and video, will show short animations and sign copies of her DVD, "Move-Click-Move," at 7 p.m. on June 10 at the Schuler Books & Music store on Alpine Avenue. Proceeds from sales of the DVD, now in a second pressing, will contribute to the Dirk Koning Scholarship Fund for film and video students at Grand Valley State University who have made, or intend to make, films and videos for the betterment of society. Morse has previously contributed proceeds from sales of the first DVD pressing.

Dirk Koning was founding director of the Community Media Center in Grand Rapids. He was once a summer intern at WGVU and later, an adjunct faculty member at Grand Valley. The internationally recognized media activist and champion of free speech died in February.

"I am glad the DVD is so successful," said Morse. "It is appropriate to use it to honor Dirk by funding new artists to do similar work."

The DVD, which was honored with both an Addy and an Omni award, is a retrospective of experimental and animated films by Morse. Released two years ago, it continues to be well received by animation students and educators, as well as families.

Morse has produced several films for the children's television programs "Sesame Street" and "Romper Room." Her films are represented in permanent collections, including New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. She has been invited to speak about her DVD project at over two dozen venues, including festivals in Canada, Croatia, Korea, Portugal and Japan.

"Move-Click-Move" contains three dozen films, hundreds of behind-the-scenes production photos, storyboards, and other sidebars to the films, with animation and motion menus. The DVD interactive format is a work of art in itself. The total running time is 2 1/2 hours.

The project was produced by Eric Oehrl at Lawrence Productions, designed by Grey-Berlin Design Studio, and supported by Digital Video Services. Morse credits the new-media companies for "sharing their skills and pushing the envelope of what a DVD can do."

"For me, this DVD is a wonderful gift," said Morse. "It has a life of its own; It created an animated and interactive world for my animations to live in."
