Controversies of Adolescent Bi-Polar Disorder

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Thomas Fluent, president of the Michigan Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, is coming to Grand Valley to discuss the controversies and challenges of child and adolescent Bi-Polar Disorder. Grand Valley's School of Social Work is sponsoring the event for students, staff and practitioners who work with children and adolescents.

The presentation will be Thursday, October 13, from 1-4 p.m. in Loosemore Auditorium at the Pew Grand Rapids Campus, 401 W. Fulton. Media are welcome.

Fluent earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Eastern Michigan University and his doctorate from the University of Michigan Medical School. His research and clinical interests include adolescent psychopathology, ADHD, mood and anxiety disorders and Asperger's Disorder.

The presentation on Bi-Polar Disorder will cover the following issues:

  • Identification of signs
  • Assessment
  • Diagnosis and treatment
  • Clinical and practical work with child/teen and family
  • Critical issues concerning medications
  • Resources for professionals
