A Grand Christmas

A group of 20 art students from Grand Valley State University have hand crafted Christmas ornaments that are hanging in the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum during the holiday season. Grand Valley is one of 15 community organizations who decorated a tree for the museum's 10th annual Christmas on the Grand.

Students in professor Steve Peters' 3-D class chose a wood and metallic theme. Stacy Getz crafted a geometric "star" from balsa wood then covered it with strips of gold, silver and copper foil. Nora Hipshear, praised by her fellow students as the balsa wood curling expert, mastered the difficult technique of curling without cracking the wood, softened by soaking in water overnight. Jessica Hardy selected the curved balsa to use as the body of her angel. Classmates constructed additional ornaments including birds and free-form designs.

Tickets to view the Christmas on the Grand display, through January 8, are $2 for students with ID and $5 for the general public. For more information call the museum, located at 303 Pearl NW, at (616) 254-0400.
