As the economy becomes increasingly globalized, it is vital for companies to conduct business with a worldwide outlook. And the 20th annual West Michigan World Trade Week is newly expanded and includes an innovative program to involve area youths.
The World Trade Week celebration runs May 16-19 in Grand Rapids and features 18 speakers from nine countries. This year, for the first time, World Trade Week West Michigan organizers have partnered with Junior Achievement and the Grand Rapids Public Schools to create a comprehensive world trade program that includes classroom experiences, an essay contest, a daylong capstone event featuring interactive sessions with international trade professionals, and a food bazaar featuring the cuisine of several countries.
The Student Global Awareness Program culminates with an all-day session at Grand Valley State University in Allendale on Wednesday, May 18. In preparation, volunteer corporate professionals began teaching JA's six-session Global Marketplace curriculum to three classes of high school juniors in early April. Those practical sessions provide real-world examples of how international trade works and its impact in West Michigan. Concurrently, area high school students have also been invited to participate in an essay contest discussing how global trade affects West Michigan and them personally. A $500 scholarship provided by National City Bank for higher education expenses will be awarded to two essay winning authors. Area colleges will host information kiosks during day, featuring information on international majors, career ideas, overseas learning opportunities, and financial assistance programs. The session is underwritten by Alticor.
But the week's activities are not only aimed at youths. With the theme "Leveraging Global Partnerships," area professionals will participate in activities to help increase their global awareness and give them insights into how to succeed in international markets. Events include:
