Some of Grand Valley State University's finest young musicians will gather for an evening of music on October 19 that promises to be truly remarkable. The public is invited to come and hear them perform in the Student Collage Concert, a highlight of Grand Valley's Fall Arts Celebration.
The concert is Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 8 p.m. in the Cook-DeWitt Center, Allendale Campus. The concert is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by a gift of Mr. and Mrs. James N. Barton
The concert highlights nine of Grand Valley's most accomplished music majors performing compositions by Mozart, Rachmaninov, Rossini , and others. Most of the young adults have already received notable awards for their musicianship, some winning national and international honors. The students include:
- Robert McCabe, of East Granby, Conn., trumpet. National Yamaha Young Artist winner and 2nd prize winner of the 2004 International Trumpet Guild Mock Orchestra Competition.
- Delgertsetseg Chimedkhan, of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, violin, toured Japan and Korea in 2003 to promote her solo CD and is associated concertmaster of the GVSU Symphony Orchestra.
- Sarunas Jankauskas, of Vilnius, Lithuania, clarinet, awards include the 2003 MTNA Young Artists Competition Honorable Mention and the 2004 International Kingsville (Texas) Young Artists Competition.
- Jason Coffey, of Allendale, Mich., baritone, aawards include 2nd place in the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts Competition, 1st place winner of the National Association of Teachers of Singers Regional Competition (NATS), and Bach Festival and Verdi Opera Theatre Competition awards.
- Lucy Finkel, of Lansing, Mich., soprano, honors include 2002 and 2003 NATS awards and 2nd place in the 2003 Bach Festival Competition.
- Theresa Zapata, of Grand Rapids, soprano
- Catherine Guarino, of Berkley, Mich., mezzo-soprano
- Callista Meeusen, of Kentwood, Mich., mezzo-soprano
- Ksenia Leletkina, of Vladivostok, Russia, piano, winner of the 1999 International Competition for Young Musicians in Russia and the 2003 Skokie Valley Symphony Orchestra Competition.
Students are accompanied by pianist Robert Byrens, GVSU artist-faculty member, on many pieces.
