Acclaimed poet Dr. Maya Angelou is coming to Grand Valley State University in an event sponsored by the student group You Beautiful Black Woman.
Angelou is hailed as one of the great voices of contemporary literature and as a remarkable Renaissance woman. She is a poet, educator, and director and continues to travel the world making appearances on college campuses, spreading her legendary wisdom. Angelou is the author of 11 best-selling books including I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and A Song Flung Up to Heaven. In 1993, she became the second poet in U.S. history to write and recite an original work at the inauguration of a president. Her poem for Bill Clinton's inauguration, "On the Pulse of Morning," won a Grammy Award for best spoken word recording.
Angelou will be speaking in the Grand Valley Fieldhouse Arena on Tuesday, September 28 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available now at the Grand Valley State University Information Desk with a valid student or faculty/staff ID. Two tickets will be issued per ID. Public sale tickets are available for $10 per ticket by visiting the Information Desk in the Kirkhof Center. For more information, call (616) 331-2020.
