Up the chain

The Higher Education Subcommittee of the state senate Appropriations Committee has unanimously endorsed Gov. John Engler's proposal to keep higher education funding at current levels for the coming year, if universities keep their tuition increases at 8.5 percent or lower.

The subcommittee's 3-0 vote came during a Friday meeting held on the campus of Saginaw Valley State University.

The plan, developed under the leadership of Grand Valley President Mark Murray, is endorsed by the chiefs of Michigan's 15 public universities as a solution to potential fudning cuts.

The measure's next step is the full Senate Appropriations Committee, where action is expected this coming Tuesday.
