In July, Grand Valley's men's and women's rowing teams headed to England
to compete in the Royal Henley Regatta ¿ one of the most prestigious
events in the sport.
The famed regatta on the Thames River is held annually for five days in
the town of Henley upon Thames. A total of 21 athletes from GVSU are
going to England to race in the event, which attracts some of the
greatest rowers in the world and is attended by members of the royal family.
The trip started off with the women's eight winning their first two
races at the Henley Women's Regatta before they were eliminated in the
third round of competition in a very close race against Glasgow University.
'The women caused a lot of jaws to drop during their practice rows and
impressed the crowd and umpires alike with their gutsy races at the
Henley,' said coach Chad Jedlic.
Both the men and the women went on to win their races versus GVSU's
sister school, Kingston University and then again their races at the
Richmond Regatta. The racing ended at the Henley Royal Regatta where the
University College of Dublin eliminated the men, the Collegiate
Champions from Ireland.
