Grand Valley's newest sculpture, by Dutch artist Cyril Lixenberg, was
installed in front of the Mackinac Hall addition.
The design of the 15-foot tall sculpture, 'Amaranth,' is continued
inside the entry to Mackinac on a flat wall piece, painted blue and
yellow. The sculpture, which will be painted yellow, means 'an imaginary
flower that never dies,' according to Lixenberg.
Henry Matthews, director of galleries and collections, said the
Mackinac Hall addition was designed to include a piece of artwork at its
entrance. Matthews said he proposed the university commission a piece
from Lixenberg for several reasons.
'He's a Dutch artist, for one thing,' Matthews said. 'Also, Cyril and
his family have given the university about 300 works on paper and
graphics over the last 40 years from his work as a print maker.'
The Art Gallery will showcase Lixenberg's work during an October exhibit.
The 70-year-old Lixenberg has other sculptures and artwork displayed in
West Michigan, including at Hope College, Holland Community Hospital,
and in Muskegon and Grand Haven.
