New Kirkhof dedication

For the Grand Valley community, the Kirkhof Center has always been a hub of activity. But now, thanks to a 16-month renovation project, the building is poised to become even busier.

Grand Valley celebrates the dedication of the newly renovated Kirkhof Center. The 16-month construction project includes a three-floor addition to the northwest side of the existing building. The new 43,000 square foot addition includes student organization and assembly space, student activities programming space and space for the Office of Student Life.

Significant interior renovation was done to the entire existing 73,000 square foot building including the creation of a main street atrium area providing light dining, shopping, information services and social lounge space. Expanded seating for dining, upgraded food service, a new games lounge and big-screen theater,
e-mail computer terminals, and student lounge areas are all highlights of the renovation. New space for the Women's Center is located on the main level. Renovations within the University Bookstore include the new Copy Center with printing and mail services.

The exciting transformation of the existing building includes expansive atrium space and creates a welcoming environment for the campus community to come together and enjoy university life at Grand Valley.

This fall semester the Kirkhof Center will be open until midnight Sunday through Thursday and until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

A brief ceremony and traditional ribbon cutting will be held at noon on Wednesday August 28, 2002 at the Kirkhof Center on the Allendale Campus. President Mark A. Murray and Student Senate President Thomn Bell will provide remarks regarding the impact of this exciting project on the campus community. Building tours and an ice cream social will follow the ceremony. The event is open to the public, and news media are encouraged to attend.

Student artist Lisa Orr will be at the dedication. Her sculpture of stained glass airplanes was selected from a student competition. The sculpture is located on the main level in the center of the building.
