Jason VanElst, a senior from Middleville, claimed Grand Valley's
first-ever track and field national championship Saturday in the 35
pound weight throw at the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships
in Boston.
VanElst was in third place entering his third and final throw of the
competition when he unleashed a toss of 65-9.5.
What an outstanding accomplishment for Jason in his senior year, said
third-year head coach Jerry Baltes. Jason is such a competitor and he
knew he had a big throw left. He stepped up when it counted the most.
In total, 14 athletes from Grand Valley qualified for the championship
meet in Boston on March 8-9. As a team, the Lakers finished 12th with
15 points. Click here
